Billy Kahler has been working as a career firefighter for two decades. Like most he spent his first years finding his passions and areas of expertise. Over the last decade he has become an instructor in the Rescue and HazMat arenas. This focus provided an opportunity to get involved in the alternative energy field. Over the last 7 years he has become one of the world’s most experienced battery deconstructionists and consultants relating to lithium batteries for Energy Storage Systems and Electric / Hybrid Vehicles. Today He works as the Technical Director for the Energy Security Agency (ESA), as a consultant for the Energy Response Group (ESRG), and technical instructor for Rescue Methods. Working with these companies has made him a subject matter expert who’s able to provide guidance, support, and education for first and second responders around the world. While in these roles he has assisted in the certification and investigation of both national and international companies looking to meet code and standard compliance; as well as deployment for onsite technical problems. All of these experiences help with the development of both ESS and EV Emergency Response Guides (ERG’s). Billy is the HazMat coordinator for his career fire department and was the former director of a regional type II HazMat team along with being a member of a national rescue team.
